Now in its 36th year the Demolition Derby has been a staple of the Rock Springs Professional Fire Fighters Annual Fundraising Efforts. Many who come to watch the twisting and crunching of metal may not know the many benefits they have provided to others in the community. Professional Fire Fighters have also worked hand in hand with the Muscular Dystrophy Association for over 60 years of partnership assisting in donation collections. These donations are used in the research of treatment and cures for muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and spinal muscular atrophy.
For over thirty years the City of Rock Springs Professional Fire Fighters’ union has collaborated with community leaders, local businesses, and emergency services organizations to develop and advance our demolition derby as an exciting, family-friendly fundraising event. Throughout the year the Fire Fighters donate derby proceeds back into the community through numerous academic, athletic, training, fire victim, and other needs-based applications. In fact, RSFF Local 1499 has funded approximately $375,000 in requests over the last three and one-half decades.
In addition to the numerous donations that are provided throughout the year by derby proceeds it also signifies the start of our annual MDA Fundraising. Many spectators generously help begin the International Association of Fire Fighters Fill the Boot campaign that is continued through Labor Day weekend. Each year Professional Fire Fighters across the country join with the Jerry’s Kids Telethon seeking to raise money for MDA. In Rock Springs Fire Fighters can be seen outside of Wal-Mart accepting donations over the Labor Day weekend. In 2013 over 100,000 Fire Fighters participated across the country helping raise $26.2 million.
Over the years the Rock Springs Professional Fire Fighters have seen firsthand the generosity of our community members and businesses. We have been privileged to gain support and a strong following for the Demolition Derby. We have been honored to donate the proceeds back into the community as well as pass along Fill the Boot Donations to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. We thank all those who come out to enjoy the Demolition Derby and everybody who donates to our Fill the Boot campaign. Remember the annual Demolition Derby is Saturday August, 9th starting at 4 p.m. at the Sweetwater County Events Complex we look forward to providing an entertaining and action packed event.
