RSHS Golfers Have Strong Showing in Riverton

RIVERTON – The Rock Springs Tigers and Lady Tigers golf teams teed off on the 2016-2017 season this past weekend in Riverton. Tiger Garrett Phillips started the season off on the right foot finishing in a tie for sixth place. Calie Cox led the Lady Tigers to a third-place finish.

On the boy’s side, Riverton started its hunt for another state title with a dominating win. They finished with a 585 which was almost 100 strokes better than second place Gillette at 668. Sheridan finished third followed by Evanston and Star Valley. The Tigers finished with a total score of 778.

Phillips shot a 15-over, 159, to tie Thermop’s Hudson Rolling for sixth. Riverton’s Easton Paxton scorched the field, shooting 10-under par to take the title.

Tiger Nathan Hale finished with a two-day total of 177 just missing a top-20 finishing coming in 23rd. Giovanni Pizzato shot a 209 to finish in 56th followed by Joseph Bingman who finished in the 75th spot to round out the Tigers.


Lady Tigers

As a team, the Rock Springs Lady Tigers opened strong with a third-place finish. Calie Cox led the charge for the ladies.

The ladies of Rock Springs shot a team total 656 to tie Cody in the third position. Sheridan took home the first tournament of the year with a 546 followed by Lander who shot a 613.

Individually, Cox paced the Lady Tigers finishing in the seventh position. Cox shot a 97 the first day and cut strokes off on the second to finish with a total of 191. Macy Jacobson of Lander paced the field with a 24-over par, 168, followed by Sheridan’s Molly Butler who finished 33-over par. Evanston’s Taryn Mayer finished in third, two strokes off Butler.

Shaylee Zampedri was strong in her opening tournment for Rock Springs. Zampedri shot a 227 to finish in a tie for 17th. Teammate Makinzie Havskjold finished 11 shots behind Zampedri to finish in the 28th position.

The Rock Springs High School golf teams will be back in action this weekend as they host the Rock Springs Invitational starting Aug. 25. Teams who will be at the tournament include Rock Springs, Green River, Evanston, Natrona, Kelly Walsh, Cheyenne East, Cheyenne Central, Laramie, Riverton, Pinedale, Lyman and Kemmerer.
