Sweetwater County Commission to Discuss Federal Vaccine Mandate

SWEETWATER COUNTY – The Sweetwater County Commission will discuss a policy regarding the pending federal mandatory vaccination mandate during its meeting Tuesday morning.

The County Commission will meet Tuesday, November 16, at 8:30 a.m. at the Sweetwater County Courthouse.

Meeting documents state there is a forthcoming federal mandatory vaccination mandate for all employers over 100 employees. Despite legal action being taken regarding the issue, Garry McLean, Sweetwater County HR Director, said the county needs to have a policy ready to go.

“As you are aware the Wyoming legislature and others have a number of legal challenges to this issue, but the County still needs to be prepared to implement,” McLean said in the documents. “The goal at this juncture is to gather any board feedback prior to bringing forth a final policy and documents to comply with this mandate if necessary.”

Other Business

In other business, the Commission will also hear an update from Castle Rock Ambulance Service. Additionally, in executive session the Commission will discuss Sweetwater Medics’ contract.

A discussion regarding the Juneteenth holiday, which is June 19, will also take place. President Joe Biden recently ordered June 19 as an official holiday to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States.

McLean said in meeting documents that the current county policy regarding holidays leaves it open to interpretation whether June 19 will be a county holiday. Currently, the policy states that holidays are as “proclaimed by the Board or other state or federal official.”

He gives a recommendation to change the wording of the policy to “as proclaimed by the Board.” McLean also recommends to the Commission to “weigh carefully closures of the courthouse with impacts on public programs that interface with banks and the State of Wyoming,” when making their decision to observe the holiday or not.
