Sweetwater County School District No. 2 Sanctions Girls Wrestling

GREEN RIVER — Sweetwater County School District (SCSD) No. 2 Athletic Director Tony Beardsley announced Tuesday night during the Board of Trustees meeting that Green River High School will now have school sanctioned girls wrestling.

Beardsley said that in July, the district always pays its fees to the Wyoming High School Activities Association (WHSAA) for insurance and all the sports they offer. This year, girls wrestling has been added to that list of sports offered.

“I was part of a committee actually set up by the WHSAA, and the executive board of the High School Association has approved the addition of state competition for women’s wrestling. It’s the fastest growing sport in the world,” Beardsley said.

He added that surrounding states such as Idaho and Montana already have girls wrestling. He clarified that it will not be a separate team with a separate coaching staff, but rather will operate with the current wrestling coaching staff and will compete in the same competitions.

“We’ve had girls in our program, so this is not a change for us. So, very important for everyone to know we did pay the dues to add female wrestling and we will sponsor a team, but it’s much like tennis, golf, all of those sports. We’ll use our same coaching staff, we’ve already had females on our team, we will make it work within the operating budget that we already have,” he said.

He said this addition is great for the district and Green River High School, as it offers more options to girl students.

“The addition of this is beneficial for us because it offers more opportunity for our females, it improves our Title 9 equity, and at the same time, and most importantly, I think it’s very important to note that the addition of women’s wrestling will not affect our activities budget,” Beardsley said.

The board voted unanimously to pay the fees to the WHSAA, which now allows girls wrestling to commence as a sanctioned sport at Green River High School.
