CASPER – An emotional rollercoaster season comes down to one final weekend as the Rock Springs Tigers begin the hunt for a state championship on Thursday. The road will start with the third seed from the east, Cheyenne East. The game is scheduled to tip at 7:30 p.m.
After going through an average start and enduring a coaching change during Christmas break, the Tigers caught fire. They ran through conference competition only losing to Kelly Walsh on the road. The Tigers again lost to the Trojans in the 4A West Regional championship to finish second.
East enters with a 4-6 record in conference and a 12-13 record overall. The Thunderbirds beat Cheyenne South to qualify for state but lost to Gillette in the semis. East bounced back to pull a small upset over Central to grab the third seed from the East.
The Thunderbirds come in averaging 52.6 points a game as a team but are giving up 53.7 points on the defensive side. Rock Springs is second in the conference in scoring averaging 66 a game but also give up a lot of points on the other end. They currently allow their opponents 60.4 per contest. The Tigers lead the conference in shooting percentage hitting 50 percent of their shots while the Thunderbirds are eighth shooting 40 percent on the season.
East is led in scoring by Erik Oliver who averages 17.5 points per game and is third in 4A in scoring. He is behind Tiger Trevor Hautala who is second in the conference in scoring averaging 21 points per contest. Tanner Muchmore averages 9.7 per game for the T-Birds. The leading rebounder on the East squad in Jacob Ross with 6.2 a game. Tiger Kelby Kramer leads the conference in rebounding averaging 11.4 per game. Kramer is also the second top scorer for Rock Springs putting in 13 a game.
