UINTA COUNTY —The Uinta County Sheriff’s Office is reporting its received multiple reports that out-of-state citizens are receiving calls showing they are from Sheriff’s Office extension numbers. The caller identifies themselves as an officer and tells the person they’ve called they are under investigation.
“We have received multiple calls from out-of-state numbers, advising they have received calls from Uinta County Sheriff’s Office extensions, advising they are under investigation, with the caller identifying themselves as an officer,” according to a social media post from Uinta County Law Enforcement Services.
“At this time, it is thought the office directory for the Sheriff’s Office has been “spoofed” and is being used to contact individuals in an attempt to scam them,” the sheriff’s department stated.
Spoofing is when a caller deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to a person’s caller ID display to disguise their identity.
Please use caution and be aware it appears these scammers will not be stopping their efforts any time soon.
