BENTONVILLE, Ark. – On Jan. 15, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. announced it plans to close 154 locations in the U.S., including the company’s 102 smallest format stores, Walmart Express, which have been in pilot since 2011. Wyoming stores will be untouched.
In total, about 10,000 U.S. associates will be impacted by the closures. More than 95% of the closed stores in the U.S. are within 10 miles on average of another Walmart. This action will be taken in an effort to strengthen Supercenters, optimize Neighborhood Markets, grow the e-commerce business and expand Pickup services for customers.
Although Wyoming’s 12 Walmart stores will go untouched, the fact that Casper and Cheyenne have two stores each might mean the future of two of Wyoming’s Walmarts are unsure.
Based off of a statement by Doug McMillon, president and CEO of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., the company seems to be fine. They plan to open more than 300 stores around the world next year.
Almost all of the stores announced to close will close this month.
