SHERIDAN – The Green River Wolves offense was shut down on Thursday as the Cheyenne Central Indians pulled the opening-round upset, 2-0.
Green River had high hopes heading in coming off 4A West Conference regular season and tournament titles. They opened against the fourth seed from the east, Cheyenne Central.
Central would strike first. Green River initially stopped an Indian shot, but the ball reflected to Ross Elliott, who scored the first point of the game. That is how it would stay as the teams entered the break.
Both teams went back and forth for most of the second half with neither team being able to find the back of the net. With 10 minutes left, Central added an insurance goal. Aaron Barber found Ross Elliott, who scored his second goal. The Indians shut down any last attacks to hold for the 2-0 win.
The Wolves will return to the pitch on Friday as they will face the second seed from the east, Gillette. Riverton was able to pull the upset in the other morning 4A game, 2-1. Game time is set for 11:30 a.m.
The Camels went their first 14 games of the season without a loss, finishing with a 13-2-2 record on the season. Sheridan had both wins over Gillette, the first coming in the final week of regular season and the second in the 4A East Regional Tournament.
