WWCC Hosts the 2019 Wolsborn-Drazovich Southwest Regional Math Contest

ROCK SPRINGS– Western Wyoming Community College hosted the 2019 Wolsborn-Drazovich Southwest Regional Math Contest on February 26 in the Rushmore Gym.

One-hundred twenty-six students, grades 6 through 12 participated in the competition this year.

The event is sponsored by TATA Chemicals and Western’s Mathematics Department. TATA Chemicals covered some of the costs associated with the event with a generous donation of $1300.

Participating schools included Farson-Eden High School, Lyman High School, Black Butte High School, Rock Springs High School, Pinedale High School, Kemmerer High School, Davis Middle School, Evanston Middle School, Farson-Eden Middle School, Rawlins Middle School, Lyman Intermediate School, and Rock Springs Junior High School.

RSHS Took Top Score for Grades 11 and 12

Rock Springs High School took the top score for Team A (grades 11 and 12).  Antonina Klatka, from Rock Springs High School, and Carson Walker, from Lyman High School, tied for first place individual scores for Team A. Klatka and Walker each won a one year tuition scholarship to Western.

Lyman High School won the Top Team B (grades 9-10) position. Team C (grade 8) and Team D  (grade 7) participants use the competition as an excellent exercise to hone their skills as they prepare to compete in the state-ranked A and B teams in the future.

“Once again, the Math Department was thrilled to host such a wonderful group of students on our campus this year.  It is exciting to witness the hard work and dedication that these students put into a contest that involves quite rigorous and challenging math problems,” said Sarah Pauley, Associate Professor of Mathematics at Western.

Sarah Pauley, Math Contest Co-Chair and Associate Professor of Mathematics at Western, and Lusi Stephens, Math Contest Co-Chair and Associate Professor of Mathematics at Western, and Luke Audette, Math Contest Co-Chair and Instructor of Mathematics at Western, organized and hosted the Math Contest.

Katey Ellis, Jason Barnett, and Brooke Marang-Quintrall, all of Western Wyoming Community College, also contributed their time to execute this event smoothly.
