ROCK SPRINGS – William Arthur Thompson, 85, of Rock Springs, Wyoming, passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at his home.
A resident of Rock Springs for the past 37 years and former long-time resident of Malone, New York, Mr. Thompson died following a three-year illness.
He was born on September 18, 1930, in West Carthage, New York, the son of the late Clarence and Hazel Hayes Thompson. Mr. Thompson attended schools in Carthage and Lowville, New York, and was graduated in 1947 from the Lowville Academy.
He also attended North County Community College, Western Wyoming Community College and was also an Emergency Medical Technician.
Thompson married Sally Ann Redmond in Natural Bridge, New York, on April 7, 1956. She passed away in Salt Lake City, Utah, on May 30, 2013.
Mr. Thompson was a United States Marine Veteran of the Korean War. He was employed by the New York State Police as a State Trooper for 22 and one half years and retired on October 28, 1976. He worked at the Lewis County New York Dairy and Climax Paperboard in Carthage, New York.
He also worked for Bross-Buffalo Joint Venture 765 KV. He later worked for Rock Springs Animal Control and also at Allied – General Chemical. He grew up on a dairy farm and as a young man he was a member of 4-H; he worked bloodhounds for the New York State Police; was a member of many civic organizations including; Masonic Lodge, Shriners International, Knights Templar, Marine Corps Association, American Legion, Veteran’s of Foreign Wars, New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association and was their past president.
He also served as a Rock Springs City Council Member and Wyoming Veteran’s Commission Member.
He is survived by three sons: Tim Thompson and wife Judie of Riverton, Utah, David Thompson and wife April, and Jeremy Thompson and wife Stacy all of Rock Springs, Wyoming; four daughters: Mary Beth Thompson and partner Serene Flesch of Fort Collins, Colorado, Cynthia Thompson Abbott and husband Jeffrey of Phoenix, Arizona, Meredith Thompson of Green River, Wyoming and Johanna Thompson of Sedona, Arizona; five brothers: Neil Thompson and wife Irene of Florida, James Thompson of New York, Arnold Thompson and wife Nina of Florida, Paul Thompson and wife Sandra of South Carolina and Steven Thompson of Florida; four sisters June Waite and husband John of Florida, Arlene Murphy and partner Richard Vock of New York, Christine Thompson of Florida, and Susan Howard and husband John of Florida; sisters-in-laws: Dava Thompson of New York, Pauline Thompson of Florida, Lynda Hall and husband David of Colorado, and Mari Lynch of Colorado; sixteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Sally; his grandson Joshua Thompson; two brothers; one sister; two brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; two nephews. Cremation will take place and memorial services are pending.
