GREEN RIVER — The Sweetwater County School District No 2. Board of Trustees approved a contract with former Green River High School Principal Darren Heslep as the district’s new work-based learning instructor, Tuesday night.
The role, as described by Heslep, would be part teaching and program management. He would oversee student internships and job shadowing, giving students their first real opportunity to choose what they want to learn and explore potential careers.
“Our first year we started out with two or three kids and now we’re over sixty, “ he said. “This is the first time that students really get to pick and choose what they want to learn and do.”
Trustees also approved a $50,000 bid to Groathouse Construction for the design work on the GRHS Career and Technical Education renovation project. Superintendent Scott Cooper said the design phase will help establish a firmer cost and scope estimate for the project. The design phase is expected to be completed in fall, with groundbreaking taking place in mid May, 2027.
The board also recognized seventh-grade social studies teacher Malcolm Robb as teacher of the year. Robb has taught in the district for 28 years.
“I didn’t really prepare anything other than I wanted to say thank you,” Robb told the board. “It’s an honor to work here.”
Trustees also unanimously approved a price increase for students’ meals, the first since August 2022. Student breakfast and lunch prices will be raised by 25 cents and adult meals will be increased by 50 cents.
