ROCK SPRINGS – Residents can expect fee increases at the indoor recreation centers, the White Mountain Golf Course and Paul J. Wataha Ballfields in the upcoming months as the Rock Springs City Council approved increases on Tuesday.
There was no public comment made at the Tuesday night meeting on the increases and no discussion by the council. Mayor Carl Demshar said the Rock Springs Park and Recreation Board looked at the fees closely and thanked the volunteer board for their hard work on them.
In the Rock Springs Parks and Recreation Board bylaws, the board is required to look at fees in the department every two years and make adjustments based on cost of living changes. The board also compared current costs to those of neighboring communities. Compared to several neighboring communities, the fees in Rock Springs are lower. They also looked at past years and which fees had been increased. There were several fees that were increased two years ago but many stayed the same.
For several months, the board went through every fee one by one. Once they were through, the fees were then sent back to recreation staff for comments and thoughts. They then were approved by the Park and Recreation Board and sent to council for final approval. The Park and Recreation Board is an advisory board and all final decisions on issues are made by the Rock Springs Council.
The fee increases for outdoor facilities such as the golf course will go into effect March 16. The indoor fees will be adjusted on May 4.
The changes included free access to the indoor facilities for active military personnel. The council approved this change a few meetings ago and it was officially added Tuesday. Another change involves special needs groups such as Life Skills, Able Hands and NOWCAP. Before, these groups did not have a set rate. With the changes on Tuesday, these groups will have to pay an annual fee of $700.
Businesses can now advertise in the ice arena which was also part of the changes. There are only eight spaces available. They are 12’ x 12′ ad size for October through April, and a $1,000 fee must be paid by August 15th. The advertiser is responsible for providing new stencil each year.
