GREEN RIVER — Green River High School’s Hope Squad will host a series of community and school events during its annual Hope Week, set for Sept. 21-25 under the theme Hope in Action.

The week is designed to promote mental health awareness, connection and suicide prevention, and for families and community members to join students at several evening events.

Hope Squad will also sell T-shirts during the week to raise funds for its awareness efforts.

Dani Deters, GRHS’s Hope Advisor, is leading this year’s Hope Week.

“Hope isn’t just something we have. It’s something we put into action,” Deters said in a press release.

Each day of Hope Week carries its own theme and challenge for students, as well as events where the community is welcome to attend:

  • Monday – Speak Hope challenges students to share an encouraging word with someone who may need it. The day includes a GRPD and Buddy lunch event and Chalk Night at 7 p.m., open to the community.
  • Tuesday – Give Hope challenges students to do something generous without expecting anything in return. A Cake Walk will be held on the patio outside the Commons during lunch, and Studio Night runs from 6 to 8 p.m. in Mr. Steiss’ room, with the community welcome.
  • Wednesday – Be Hope for Someone challenges students, staff and community members to wear Cowboys gear in purple, teal or gold, or a mental-health-related shirt. Hope Squad members will spend the school day “Passing It On,” sharing clothespins bearing encouraging messages for students to pass along to others. That evening, the Hope Week 5K Fun Run/Walk begins at 6 p.m. at GRHS, with community resource tables set up outside the school.
  • Thursday – Choose Hope encourages students to replace negative thoughts with more hopeful ones when something goes wrong. A Spin the Wheel activity will run during lunch, and Mind Jar & Craft Night follows from 6 to 7 p.m. in the GRHS media center, open to the community.
  • Friday – Share Your Story caps the week with a reminder that students’ own stories can give others hope. Students are encouraged to dress in Dolly Parton inspired clothing for Dolly Parton Day. Lunch that day will include Hope Squad nominations and a student sticky-note activity.
