GREEN RIVER — The Green River Police Department (GRPD) is seeking approval to apply for a Coronavirus Emergency Supplemental Funds (CESF) sub-grant to purchase new portable radios to assist other Sweetwater County law enforcement agencies.

The Green River City Council will consider authorizing the GRPD to submit an application to the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation (WDCI) for the funds during its meeting Tuesday, August 17, at 7 p.m. at city hall.

Recent Wyolink radio installations in Rock Springs are not compatible with the current portable radios used by the GRPD, which are approximately 15 years old according to meeting documents.

“Dual-band portable radios are needed for interoperability with the new system in Rock Springs, are essential to maintaining the ability to assist other agencies operating inside buildings in the Rock Springs area, and therefore a critical component of the Sweetwater County law enforcement COVID-19 response plan,” the meeting documents state.

The anticipated cost of the new radios is approximately $110,000 with no local match required for grant. The WDCI applied for and was awarded a CEFS Grant in 2020 as part of the first round of Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act funding. The grant is intended to be sub-awarded to law enforcement agencies within the state to prevent, prepare, and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Other Business

The GRPD has sought out grant funds to purchase a driving simulator for educational purposes within the department. The Council will consider a resolution accepting the $5,000 grant from the State Farm Foundation so GRPD can purchase the simulator. The simulator will promote education in safe driving programs.
