Handicap Upgrades at Kiwanis Wrapping Up

ROCK SPRINGS – Several upgrades to local parks are starting to wrap up. These includes changes to Kiwanis Park to make it more accessible to those with disabilities and lighting upgrades at Veterans and Garnet Parks.

At the recent Rock Springs Parks and Recreation meeting, Director of the department Dave Lansang reported the upgrades at Kiwanis are finishing up. One goal which was accomplished was removing gravel and pouring concrete in its place in the upper parking area. Lansang said the gravel was making it hard for those in wheelchairs.

Concrete pathways throughout the park were also poured. The paths go to the main areas of the park and will make it easier for those in wheelchairs as well. Lansang said over $100,000 in concrete work was done. The city utilized ADA grant money to do the upgrades.

The issue came about several months ago after several residents approached the Rock Springs City Council and voiced concerns about how unfriendly Kiwanis Park was to those who have disabilities.

Lights

To help save money and the environment, the Rock Springs City Council recently approved replacing the lights at Veterans Park and Garnet Park. Other portions of the city have already went through the change.

Lansang said Veterans Park is completely finished and Garnet is “really close.”

Outdoor Pools

Most of the outdoor pools around Rock Springs have already closed up for the winter. Lansang said both the splash pads at Garnet Park and at the Rock Springs Family Recreation Center will remain open until sometime in September if the weather cooperates.
