New Black Butte Alternative High School nearing completition; School is located near WWCC

ROCK SPRINGS – After years on Lowell Avenue, alternative students will have a new home next year as Black Butte Alternative High School nears completion.

A ribbon cutting has been set for March 25 and Governor Matt Mead is scheduled to be there. The building is located right next to Western Wyoming Community College and is being built by School Facility Commission money. At this past meeting, the school on Lowell Avenue was declared as surplus property and no future plans for the school were discussed.

Being built by SFC funds, the new schools being built have to follow specific guideline. Swimming pools are NOT approved by the SFC so this school does not include a swimming pool. A swimming pool would be considered an extra and SWCSD No. 1 would have to pay the cost to build it. Currently, there is no plan for a new swimming pool in the district.

SWCSD No. 1 is currently doing upgrades at the Rock Springs High School Pool. The upgades do not include adding two extra lanes because of the challenges that would pose. Sweetwater County School District No. 1 has been looking at a second high school and there were several meetings which took place in 2014 to give the public opportunities to give input in what they would like to see there. The location for the second high school is on the BLM property where Pilot Butte Elementary and the new Stagecoach Elementary is being built. The second high school is still a ways out and depends on they Wyoming Legislature and the funding which will be given to the School Facilities Commission.

The district currently has three major projects underway. Along with Black Butte, Stagecoach Elementary is being built and a new school in Farson-Eden is being designed and close to starting construction. The above link also gives updates on happenings at Black Butte as well as the other projects.
