ROCK SPRINGS – Families who use the daycare at the Rock Springs Family Recreation Center are waiting for the Rock Springs City Council’s approval as the Parks and Recreation Board agreed to change Wee Care to five days a week year round.
The rec center moved to five days a week during the summer months to see how many people would use the Wee Care and if it would be worth moving to five days a week. When the numbers came back, the board was very surprised. Chairman Ron Cheese said he was “pleasantly surprised” by the numbers.
Wee Care employee Sara Burns spoke to the board and really pushed for the need to move from Tuesday through Thursday to Monday through Friday during the summer months. She said the employees in the Wee Care center can work on the schedule so it can be covered.
At one point during the discussion, Burns said there was enough interest to actually stay open an extra hour, but the board said they would take it one step at a time. Board member Stevi Madsen told Burns this was really a tribute to how hard the employees of the day care work. Madsen added that if they start doing too many things and adding too many hours it could turn into a “not so good thing” for the board, employees and patrons.
Board member Lynne Demshar asked how much it would affect them financially. Park and Recreation Director Dave Lansang explained it was very minimal. The most would be the addition to salaries which would be approximately $3,000.
With the numbers going in the right way, the minimal effect financially and the interest in doing it, the board approved a letter of support be drafted and sent to the Rock Springs City Council for their approval to extend the daycare service to five days. The council should have the request before them at the March 18 meeting.
