SWEETWATER COUNTY – Recently, a group of children spoke the Rock Springs City Council about what it means to be a child of a military parent. With the month of April celebrating these unsung heroes, people are asked to wear purple on April 15 to show support to the children.

The University of Wyoming Extension Military 4-H Youth and Family Program is inviting everyone across the state of Wyoming to wear purple on Monday, April 15th. They said purple symbolizes all branches of the military, as it is a combination of Army green; Marine red; and Coast Guard, Navy and Air Force blue. Purple Up! acts as a visible way to show support and thank military youth for their strength and sacrifices.

While our men and women are serving overseas, spouses and children are left to take care of the normal day-to-day business. Approximately 5,000 of Wyoming’s children and youth have been directly affected by the military deployment of at least one parent.

“These children and youth are a source of pride and honor to us all, and it is only fitting that we take time to recognize their contributions, celebrate their spirit, and let our men and women in uniform know that while they are taking care of us, we are taking care of their children and youth,” Rock Springs Mayor Carl Demshar read as the proclamation was presented.

The UW Extension Program is asking for not only individuals, but groups such as sports teams, companies, schools, social clubs and rotary groups to all get involved in Purple Up! They also suggested businesses put a Purple Up message on road sign signs and in business windows.

“We hope everyone will take this opportunity to celebrate these young heroes,” the UW Extension Program said. “Be creative … the goal is for military youth to actually see the support of their community.”

They are also asking for groups and individuals to send them your photos to post on the Wyoming Military Youth and Family Website and Facebook page, where military youth and families from across the state will be able to see them. Photos should be sent to [email protected].
