Rock Springs Police Department Warns Residents of Phone Scams

ROCK SPRINGS — The Rock Springs Police Department (RSPD) is warning residents that it has received an increased number of reports regarding fraudulent calls requesting payments through Apple Pay gift cards or similar gift cards.

The department issued a statement today saying “The callers in these situations will often claim to be from a government agency such as the IRS, Border Patrol, or local police, and that by providing payment you can avoid jail time or other consequences.”

The callers also claim that the resident has won a contest. However, payment needs to be made before the resident receives the prize.

“Anytime an unknown caller asks you to send payment via gift card please use extra caution, ask questions, verify additional information, and most importantly be aware that this is a common scam,” the post states.

If you have been the victim of a similar fraud, you can make a report to the Rock Springs Police Department by calling 352-1575.
