COACH’S CORNER

Q: Let’s talk a little bit about last season. What were you proud of? What did you wish went better?

Main: “I was proud of how the boys battled and competed in every game. They would find a way to dig themselves a hole early on but would claw back and make for exciting finishes. I wish that the season would have ended in us earning a trip to state. The difference between us at 11-14 and 18-7 came down to missing a few free throws, a missed lay-up, one missed block out, etc. Oftentimes it was one possession that made the difference late. Having the draw we had playing in the elimination game in Evanston vs. Evanston was tough but was not the reason we lost. We needed to make plays, make free throws, and not turn the ball over. We lost by six and shot 8-23 at the line. Can’t do that in big games.”

Q: What are your initial thoughts about this upcoming season?

Main: “My initial thought on the season is one of hope. We hope for a successful and productive season. We hope we are able to play through march uninterrupted. While we may lack size and certain skill in areas, I am excited for the “team” that we will have. We do not have ego guys, we have guys that are team first. These guys are great teammates, they are competitors, they work hard, they are motivated, they are coachable and will play in any role they are given. A lot of these boys are football kids and developed their bodies and got a lot stronger from last year. We have a lot of athleticism and for the most part we are young when it comes to experience, which can be a blessing and a curse. We may take our lumps early on with our schedule the way it is set up, but we will be in the mix and hit our stride towards the end of the year.”

Q: How do you compare against the competition in your conference?

Main: “We add Natrona County to the mix this year which are returning starters from tough team they had last year. They will be well coached and be a new and exciting addition to the conference. Cody is going to be very good and is always loaded with big and strong kids as well as a few returning starters. Most of their boys play football and will have a lot of confidence coming off a state championship. Riverton was young last year and will be returning four of five starters. They will be big and will shoot the ball well, another well-coached team that will be in the mix for a top seed. In the other quadrant Green River returns almost everyone from team that made state. They will be very good. Star Valley lost a ton but reloads every year. Evanston has a new coach with a lot of credentials and college coaching experience. Their culture only expects them to win. Jackson has a really good younger group coming up that will make them pretty competitive moving forward.”

Q: Any other thoughts you’d like to include?

Main: “A lot of “new” for the Tigers this year with a new floor, new uniforms, new mindset, etc. We hope to continue to grow and build our culture here at Rock Springs. It’s always our push to have a competitive product on the floor, respect the game, play with pride, passion and grit. We are excited to have a chance to play this season with so many others kids across the country not able to do so.”
