RSHS graduation, naming the new K-4 school and several resignations and new hires are on the agenda for Monday’s SWCSD No. 1 Board meeting

ROCK SPRINGS – The Rock Springs High School graduation date was tabled at the last Sweetwater County School District No. 1 after parents raised concerns about moving it from the traditional Saturday to a weekday night. On Monday, the proposal will be back in front of the board.

The new proposal the board will discuss and take action on will be to move RSHS graduation to Saturday, June 6 at 10 a.m. at Tiger Stadium. The new proposal states seniors will still be concluding their year in the same fashion. Senior finals will be during the week of May 25 while the last day for seniors will be May 28. The Renaissance send off rally will take place on May 29.

The reason the administration at RSHS originally changed graduation was because state soccer would be using both the RSHS field and the Rock Springs Junior High fields. Parents spoke to the board during the August meeting which prompted the board to table the proposal to take a better look at other options available.

Naming of the new K-4 building

Recently SWCSD No. 1 recently had a competition asking residents what they would like the new name of the new K-4 school to be. The new K-4 school is on the Bureau of Land Management property by Sage and Pilot Butte.

Entries were then turned over to the naming committee which met on Aug. 20 to pick a winner. The committee was presented 55 names from 72 separate submissions. Names were gathered through two sources, online submission forms through the district website or handwritten forms dropped of at the CAB.

The naming form was designed by Natalie Mikesell, secretary at Sage Elementary and principal Rick Edwards. The forms were created by Lennie Lew, Dustin Jones and Timmy Lew of the technology department with the support of Chase Hafner.

When all forms were prepared and ready, school messenger calls went out to all K-6 families in the district inviting them to participate in submitting names. Families were informed of the different routes to submitting a name.

Assistant Superintendent Kelly McGovern was supportive of using school messenger and Courtney Mikkelsen created and sent out the call. The invitation went out on July 29 and the window for submitting names closed on Aug. 13.

On Monday, the winning name will be announced and voted on by the school board.
