SWCSD No. 1 Board will take action on changes to student internet use and access policies; Monday will be new board member Paul Kauchich’s first official meeting

ROCK SPRINGS – It will be the first meeting for the newest member of the Sweetwater County School District No. 1 Board Paul Kauchich on Monday. One item the board will take action on is changes to the policies addressing student internet use and internet access.

Kauchich was selected as the newest board member in a special meeting in January. He is replacing Randall Wendling who resigned from his seat to serve on the Sweetwater County Commission.

At the regular board meeting in January, the board was presented changes to the policies addressing student internet use and internet access. The board has had a month to review the changes and now will take action on the changes Monday night.

While a lot of it is cleaning up language in the policies, the big change involves consequences of violating the use and access policy.

Under first offense, the old policy stated a student violating the policy would have privileges revoked for 45 days from the date of the offense. The change states a student who violates Policy JFCM in grades kindergarten through 12th shall be disciplined at the discretion of the building principal.

Under second offense the old policy said the student will no longer be allowed to use the district wide network for a semester from the date of the offense. The proposed change states a student who violates Policy JFCM in grades kindergarten through 12 shall be disciplined for up to three days suspension and may receive additional disciplinary action.

Under the third offense the old policy said privileges are revoked permanently, throughout their remaining school years. The proposed change reads student who violates Policy JFCM in grades kindergarten through 12 shall be disciplined for up to five days suspension and may receive additional disciplinary action.

Under the old policy, there was not a fourth offense but under the proposed changes, one will be added. It reads a student who violates Policy JFCM in grades kindergarten through 12 shall be disciplined for up to 10 days suspension and may receive additional disciplinary action.
