ROCK SPRINGS – If there were opening night jitters, the Rock Springs Tiger wrestling squad did not show it as they pinned Riverton Thursday night to open the 2016-2017 season.
While Head Coach Brad Profaizer said he was satisfied with the win, he stressed there is still a long way to go.
“I am very satisfied with the way we wrestled but it’s very early and we have a long season ahead. Our focus is preparing for regionals and state,” the coach said after the win.
Profaizer explained they still have a few kids out and asked several Tigers, Brayden Latham, Dakota Knezovich, James Black and RJ Stassinos, to step up in weight.
“They did exactly what we asked them to do,” he said.
In most of the matches on Thursday, Tiger wrestlers were able to take control early. By having Wolverine wrestlers down, they forced mistakes which led to pins. Cameron Metcalf, Wyatt Yenney, Cole Seymour and Trevor Ryan all scored falls on Thursday.
Casey Isaacson was up early and won by technical fall after it was noticed the wrestler he was facing had braces and was not wearing a mouthguard. Stassinos and Black both scored major decision wins on the night.
The Tigers will get a look at more schools and more wrestlers as they head to the Evanston Invitational this weekend. While many regional teams such as Big Piney, Mountain View and Green River will be in attendance, schools from Utah and Nevada are also scheduled to make the trip.
