Significant Winter Storm to Impact the Cowboy State through Friday Night

SYNOPSIS: A significant winter storm will continue to impact the Cowboy State through this evening. The heaviest snow will fall across the western Wyoming mountains and north of Jackson through midday, before decreasing during the afternoon. 

Cold air will continue to move south today east of the continental divide. Snow will occur in most areas as the Pacific moisture moves over the cold air dome. Local upslope effects will enhance snowfall in some areas.  A brisk north wind will cause some blowing and drifting snow and low visibility.

In the west and southwest, colder air will move into the area by late morning. A mix of rain and snow will occur though the morning.  In the areas where rain occurs, the rain will change to snow by late morning or early afternoon. 

Improving conditions are expected from northwest to southeast tonight into Saturday morning. Many areas may see the coldest temperatures of the season over the weekend, with some locations struggling to get above zero Saturday.
