VERNAL, Utah – The Green River Wolves were able to make it through the cold as they returned to the mat with a fourth-place finish at the Tournament of Champions.

The Wolves were only one point out of the top three as they finished the tournament with 174 points. Grand Junction took home the team title with 221 followed by Juab with 193.5. Uintah edged the Wolves out for third with 175 points while Pleasant Grove rounded out the top five.

Green River was led by Gage Byers who went 5-0 to take the 120 title. He scored two early falls to move into the semifinals. He won a close battle against Pleasant Grove’s Cole Zorn, 7-5, to move into the finals. There he faced another Sweetwater County wrestler Cameron Metcalf. In another close match, Byers won the crown with a 7-3 decision.

Two other Wolves made it to the finals but came up just short of the top prize. At 106, Cyro Montoyo scored two falls on his way to the title match. Uintah wrestler Gavin Ayotte scored a sudden victory win in the finals to take first. At 220, Jordan Tucker opened with a win by pin at the 1:13 mark of the match and followed it with a 5-0 victory to move into the finals. In another close battle, Ethan Barnes of Norwood/Nucla High School edged Tucker for the title, 5-3.
