ROCK SPRINGS – The ladies of the Mustang’s soccer squad made the Sheridan/Powell road trip to open Region IX play. WWCC split over the weekend rebounding from a Powell loss to open with a Saturday win in Sheridan.

In Sheridan on Saturday the Mustangs got their first Region win of the season by defeating the Lady Generals of Sheridan College.

Head Coach Jeff Atkinson said the first part of the first half was not the best soccer that Western had played this year.

“Most likely due to the long bus rides and match the day before it took the Mustangs about 15 to 20 minutes before they started playing good soccer,” he said.

Fortunately for the Mustangs, they were able to keep Sheridan off of the board and the first half ended with better soccer from Western and a 0 – 0 tie.

The second half was much better from the Mustangs from the start.  They applied pressure on the Sheridan defense and connected passes together in the attacking half and attacking third.

The first goal of the match came from Katelin in the 52nd minute when she intercepted a back pass from Sheridan and sunk the shot.  The second goal was in the 84th minute. A MKenzie Safford corner kick was sent to the back post, Rachel Richards headed it back into the middle and Maddie Case easily kicked in the ball from about four-yards away.

The final score to the match was 2 to 0.  The Mustang defense and keeper Rylee Blacker recorded their third shutout on the season.  The win evens the record for Western this season at 2 – 2 – 1 and a Region IX record of 1 – 1 – 0.

Tough Loss to Take in Powell

On Friday in Powell WY, the Mustangs squared off against the Lady Trappers of Northwest College to start off the Region IX Play for the 2015 season.

The Lady Trappers were a very physical team and Head Coach Jeff Atkinson said it took the Mustangs some time to adjust to the style of play on the field. However, with the wind to their backs the Mustangs in the first half dominated much of the play and missed on several good chances at the Northwest goal.

The lone goal in the first 45 minutes was off of a free kick in the 9th minute that the Lady Trappers converted from about 24 yards away. The halftime score was 1 – 0 in favor of the home team.

With the wind in their face the second half was not as offensive as Western would have liked.  The final goal of the match was scored in the 62nd minute when a Lady Trapper through ball was mishandled by the Mustangs and a Northwest player was there for an easy kick into the net.

The final score was 2 – 0 in favor of Northwest, however Atkinson said the Mustangs played well and did not quit on each other or the game plan throughout the match.
