LARAMIE — The University of Wyoming soccer team scored early Thursday, but Weber State answered with two goals of its own to hand the Cowgirls a 2-1 loss at the Madrid Sports Complex.
The loss dropped Wyoming to 2-1-0 on the season, while Weber State improved to 1-1-1.
Maddie Burr gave the Cowgirls an early lead in the third minute, heading in a cross from Alyssa Glover. The goal was Burr’s second in as many games, while the assist was Glover’s first of the season.
Glover now has 50 career points, which ranks fifth in Wyoming program history.
“For us, it was a game where we could have gotten more than one,” Wyoming coach Josh Purdum said. “That was a bit disappointing. We created chances. We were good between the boxes. We just weren’t gritty enough and weren’t strong enough to get the second one.”
Weber State responded in the 31st minute when Oakley Anderson capitalized on a Wyoming mistake to tie the match.
Less than three minutes later, the Wildcats took the lead. Nellie Brooks scored in the 34th minute off a pass from Lily Blum, giving Weber State a lead it would not surrender.
Wyoming continued to generate opportunities, finishing with a 19-6 advantage in shots. The teams were even 5-5 in shots on goal.
Hadley Linder led all players with five shots, including one on goal.
Wyoming goalkeeper Haley Bartel made three saves, including an acrobatic stop midway through the second half that kept the Cowgirls within striking distance. Weber State goalkeeper Lauren Butorac recorded four saves.
Wyoming will have a week off before returning to action Aug. 27 against South Carolina. The Cowgirls will host the Gamecocks at 4 p.m. at the Madrid Sports Complex in what will be one of the biggest matches in the history of the facility.
