First September 11 Memorial Walk Scheduled

ROCK SPRINGS — The first annual Rock Springs Memorial Walk for 9/11 will take place on the morning of Saturday, September 11, 2021, from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m.

Our Mission is to honor and remember the 343 Firefighters, 60 Law Enforcement Officers, and eight emergency medical service technicians that made the ultimate sacrifice of their lives, a press release about the event states.

“More than 40 memorial stair climbs, or walks occur every year across the country, and we wanted an event here in Rock Springs, so we could do our part to memorialize our fallen brothers,” Sweetwater County Fire District No. 1 Chief Scott Kitchner said. “It is a humbling experience and intense reminder of the sacrifice, dedication, and commitment required of those who serve and protect our communities.”

The event is not timed and is designed as an opportunity to reflect and remember, while at the same time, getting one heck of a workout. You choose your own pace and your own goals. Some firefighters will ascend with full bunkers and high-rise packs, others will climb together with their families, the release states. Residents can range from running to walking to taking their time and soaking in the scope of the event. The focus of the event will always be remembrance. The mood will be positive as we honor the people and events of September 11, 2001, with each step.

Immediately following the walk, everyone is invited to attend a memorial service with keynote speaker at Western Wyoming Community College. We will also have informational areas, displays of emergency apparatus and a chance for the public to interact with local first responders. Food and beverages will be available.

Please come out to show support and be a HERO to a HERO, because forgetting is not an option. We climb because they climbed, the release states.
