ROCK SPRINGS — The American Legion Archie Hay Post 24 celebrated Veterans Day by surprising the first baby born November 11 at the Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County with a special gift basket.

The gift basket has everything a family could need for a new baby including a baby bathtub, crafted blankets, outfits, stuffed animals, bath items, towels, books, and diapers.

The lucky recipients of the baby basket were Makayla Cuthbertson and Bailey Layton. They welcomed baby River to the world at 8:46 p.m. November 11, 2021.

“We look forward to doing this every year. We enjoy putting this basket together to celebrate the first baby born on Veterans Day. This is our fifth year, and we plan to continue to this tradition,” Gina Dusel, Auxiliary Department of Wyoming President, said.

Parents receiving the basket are Bailey Layton and Makayla Cuthbertson.

Due to the hospital’s current guest and visitation policy, Dusel and Virginia Struck were able to deliver the baby basket to the Labor and Delivery Unit on behalf of the entire American Legion Archie Hay Post family. Dusel also provided a picture of the team that donated and participated in assembling the gift basket.

“This is such a cool thing for our patients and we are so honored that these wonderful ladies think of our new moms,” Megan Jacobson, MHSC Director of Labor and Delivery, said.

Those making sure the parents received the basket are from left to right (MHSC Labor and Delivery’s Clinical Coordinator) Amelia Cuevas, Gina Dusel, Virginia Struck, (MHSC Labor and Delivery nurse) Brandi Wengert.
