Green Flag Ready to Drop at Sweetwater Speedway

ROCK SPRINGS – Local racing fans and drivers are getting ready for the greenĀ flag to fall as there is less than a month before the scream of engines will be coming from the Sweetwater Speedway.

Like last season, there will be five races this season. The first practice is set for May 15 with the season opener scheduled for May 27 – 28. In the season opener, fans can expect to see IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sports Mods, Street Stocks, Cruisers and Go-Karts. There will also be a Dwarf car special with cars from Utah, Wyoming and Colorado.

Racing takes place at the Sweetwater Speedway at the Sweetwater Events Complex north of Rock Springs. Pit gates open at 3 p.m. and the grandstands open at 6 p.m. One change made this year is that instead of starting at 7:30 p.m., racing will start a half hour earlier at 7 p.m.

From there, racing will take place on the weekends of June 10-11, July 2-4, Aug. 19-20 and Sept. 16-17. For more information on ticket packages and prices visit the Sweetwater Speedway website.

There will be several funĀ events this season to build excitement. Fans have a chance to meet the drivers before opening weekend this Saturday. Drivers will at the White Mountain Mall talking to fans, taking pictures and signing autographs. Also, fans should be on the lookout for possible Sprint Cup Cars in June.

 

 

Last Year’s Finishes

In the IMCA Modifieds, Bert Beech and Casey Delp have had a good rivalry going and will look to battle again this season. Beech won the track title in 2014, but Delp got the best of Beech last season to take the trophy. Also coming off top-five finishes last season are Jake Donnelly, Michael Hale and Justen Yeager.

In Sports Mod, familiar faces were also battling until the end. Kevin Wright who held off Chuck Delp and Travis Poll to take the title. Dave Pitt and Troy Householder rounded out the top five.

Street Stocks has been one of the most competitive series for many years and looks to continue this season. Kelly Lee and Verlon Lee have been at the top or towards the top the past several season. In 2015, Larry KamlĀ would sneak by both to take the title. Lakota Cleveland and Ron Swanson rounded out the top five.

Finally, in the Cruiser Division, DJ Davison ran away from the field to take the track championship. Ty Hoopes finished second with Jim High coming in third. Jason Hernandez and Dakota Norberg finished fourth and fifth.
