Museum of the Mountain Man Honored by True West Magazine

The Museum of the Mountain Man in Pinedale ranks fourth on the Top 10 List of museums that celebrate the American West.

PINEDALE — Hundreds of museums celebrate the American West (including more than a few east of the Mississippi). But True West magazine says the Museum of the Mountain Man in Pinedale, WY, is one of the best.

In fact, the museum is number four in True West’s Top 10 Western Museums of 2021. Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West, Scottsdale, AZ took top honors. The entire list of best museums is in True West’s September 2021 issue, on newsstands August 11.

“The Museum of the Mountain Man seems to be a fixture on our honors list,” says True West Executive Editor Bob Boze Bell. “But it is well deserved, considering the time and attention it provides to the many great stories of the West. It is truly a top Western museum.”

Two-time Spur Award-winning writer Candy Moulton and the editors of True West selected the winners for this annual award based on extensive travels, research and firsthand experiences in visiting dozens of Western museums each year.

Moulton says a diorama depicting Hugh Glass’s grizzly bear fight is one of the key mountain man exhibits at this museum, but equally impressive is the replica of American Horse’s tipi. This 20-foot tipi dominates the center of the museum and is an authentic e-creation featuring brain-tanned buffalo hide.

Furnishings include buffalo robes, shields, bows and arrows, a hand-painted drum and buffalo hide liner.

True West magazine is in its 68th year of leading the way in presenting the true stories of Old West adventure, history, culture and preservation.
