ROCK SPRINGS – The Mustangs soccer team is finishing up a busy week of action as they prepare for its final home game this Friday at Rock Springs High School.
Since Friday, the men have played four games and have won three. The team’s loss came on Tuesday as they fell to Northeastern in Colorado, 1-0. The wins included two important conference wins which keep the team towards the top of the standings.
Afer losing two on the road, the Mustangs returned home this past weekend with conference games against Sheridan and Northwest. On Friday against Sheridan, a second-half goal by Josh Abplanalp was the difference for WWCC in the 1-0 win. Daniel Becerra assisted on the only Mustang goal.
On Saturday the teams faced Northwest. It would take a comeback effort from the Mustangs as two second-half goals would give Western the 3-2 win. After Northwest took the lead, a Ty Nielsen goal evened it up. The Trappers scored a second goal before the half.
Abplanalp would take a pass from Matthew Ochoa and even up the match to start the second half. Then at the 70th minute, Seth Romsa and Grayson Barnes would connect to give the Mustangs the lead and the win.
After the two home wins, the team hit the road for a game against the University of Wyoming Club. It was all Mustangs as they scored four goals in the first half and added two late in the 6-0 shutout. Briston Loweel had two goals in the win. Abplanalp, Romsa, Ochoa and Grayson Barnes all scored in the win.
On Friday, the Mustangs will welcome Trinidad State to Rock Springs High School. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. Western lost to Trinidad 3-0 in an earlier matchup. The Region IX tournament is scheduled to start Oct. 22.
