On Oct. 23 at the Sweetwater County Family Justice Center located at 725 C St., there will be a candlelight vigil and open house to remember the victims of domestic violence in Sweetwater County.
Recently, Rock Springs Mayor Carl Demshar declared October as Domestic Violence Awareness month. During the presentation, Joyce Corcoran gave some statistics about domestic violence locally.
She said the Family Justice Center opened its doors in November of 2012. Since that time, they have served 737 unduplicated individuals who have received over 10,404 services at the center. There have been 237 forensic interviews have been done at the center. There have also been 106 domestic violence protective orders and 88 stalking protection orders that have been filed. Legal aid has provided services to 324 clients in Sweetwater County.
Demshar said the Family Justice Center and YWCA provide a much needed service to the community and do a “fantastic” job.
“I don’t know if the day will ever come, but the day we don’t need this organization will be a good one,” Demshar explained on his hopes domestic and family violence would end completely.
