Post 24 takes two over the Knights on Tuesday

ROCK SPRINGS – Weather has kept the Mustangs off the field for several games now but on Tuesday they returned with a vengeance. In their first appearance at home this season, Archie Hay Post 24 took two from the Green River Knights.

Post 24 opened the season at the Green River Invitational last weekend but since have been competing against the weather more than other teams. Holden Cain set the bar high in the first game against the Knights.

Cain was the different as he pitched five innings while only allowing two runs. Post 24 scored two in the first and one in the second. The Knights responded in the third with one run to cut the lead back to two. Rock Springs exploded in the fourth and fifth innings scoring seven runs.

While the offensive outburst put the game away, the Knights fought to the bitter end scoring two in the top of the seventh and final inning. Rock Springs was able to get the game one win, 10-4.

Individually it was Cain on the mound. He went five striking out three on the way. He was able to get ahead of the count early as he threw 17 first-pitch strikes.

Offensively, Koltin Legerski paced the team with three runs batted in. Skye Parr had three of the Post 24 13 hits while Ryne Grossnickle and JD Hamby each added a pair of hits.

Andrew Munoz pitched three innings for Green River while Trevor Zumwalt  and Blake Gelinas spent time on the mound.

The second game was a little bit closer as Green River turned the tables a bit on Post 24. Green River scored one in the first and one in the second to take the early lead. The Knights added two more in the top of the fourth but Rock Springs answered with two of its own. Hamby sparked a big fifth inning as Post 24 plated six runs to take a 8-4 lead.

Green River plated two more in the top half of the sixth but Archie Hay Post 24 added an insurance run in the bottom half as they were able to comeback and hold on for the 9-6 win.

Parr went five strong innings on the mound for Post 24, striking out four batters along the way. Parr was also able to through a lot of first-pitch strikes.

Offensively for Archie Hay Post 24, Hamby went 3-3 at the plate to spark the bats. Cain drove in two runs while Grossnickle had two hits and an RBI.

For Green River, Tanner Hanks went three innings on the mound while Kelly went two. Hanks punched out six while Kelly finished with three strikeouts. Heitzman had two hits on the night for the Knights while McCaden Mikesell  had a RBI.

Rock Springs will compete at a tournament in Jackson this weekend while Green River will battle in Evanston on the road on Thursday before heading to Jackson.
