In honor of Rocky Mountain Sports and Physical Therapy’s 21st anniversary, and Fremont Therapy Group’s 25th, we recognize our owner Michelle Cook.
In December 2000, Michelle founded Rock Spring’s first physical therapist-owned outpatient physical therapist clinic.
Her practice has continued to grow over the last 20 years, involving 3 locations and the building of two facilities, designed specifically with the patients’ needs in mind.
Michelle has been a practicing physical therapist since 1987 and, in addition to her broad range of knowledge, skills and abilities, she has advanced training in Women’s Health and wound care, and is skilled in performing dry needling treatments.
After practicing in the Broadway location, with a staff of two clinicians, plus support staff, Rocky Mountain moved to a brand new, 3,500 square foot facility on Blair Avenue in 2003. In addition to a larger gym, this new clinic added more private treatment rooms and facilities to provide wound care, both of which allowed Michelle to expand these valued specialties in the community.
In 2008, Michelle needed to expand again, moving her practice to another brand-new facility, this time providing the community with the only aquatic therapy pool in Sweetwater County, and 4,500 square feet of space centrally located in the community with easy access for patients.
Rocky Mountain joined Fremont Therapy Group’s family of clinics in 2017, forming a strategic alliance that allowed Michelle to continue growing the patient care aspect of her practice, while the team at Fremont Therapy Group provided infrastructure support, including staff recruiting, payroll, payables, and compliance.
Michelle was first introduced to physical therapy by her longtime friend and mentor, Norma Stensaas, who practiced in the field for more than 65 years. After completing her degree in physical therapy, she was able to return to Sweetwater County to work with her mentor at Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater Country for another eight years.
Norma Stensaas, PT was the first person to expose me to the field of physical therapy. First, as my treating therapist, then as my boss at MHSC where I worked as a PT tech, and finally, as my mentor and boss after getting my degree in physical therapy. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to work with her and to live and work in this great community. Even more rewarding, is to now work alongside my daughter, who is also a great inspiration and brings her own wonderful personality and expertise to the clinic.
Michelle Cook
Michelle has the distinct honor of now working with daughter, Ryan Cook, who graduated from the University of North Dakota with her Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2019. Ryan was raised in and around the clinic and grew to love the field.
My mom is the inspiration for my choosing a career in physical therapy. I grew up watching the positive impact she had on patients’ lives and am thrilled to continue that legacy.
Michelle’s Daughter, Ryan Cook
Today, Rocky Mountain Sports & Physical Therapy has a strong team of clinicians skilled in evidence-based treatments for pre-and post-operative and general orthopedic care, sports rehabilitation, pain management, women’s health, vestibular and balance issues, dry needling and aquatic care.
As partners, we are proud to acknowledge Michelle’s many accomplishments and contributions to the Rock Springs community. We have the highest respect for her, and look to her and the Rock Springs team of clinicians to take Rocky Mountain Sports & Physical Therapy into the next decade, providing the community with the highest quality of physical therapy care available.
