RS Council waives fees at Civic Center for boxing event to benefit local resident Bobby Trujillo; Council gives permission to Parks Department to apply for forestry grant

ROCK SPRINGS – In times of tragedy and hardships, the littlest things can make a world of difference. On Tuesday, the family of Bobby Trujillo received a gift from the Rock Springs City Council.

The council unanimously approved reducing the fees to the Rock Springs Civic Center for a special event for Bobby Trujillo. Before the vote, Councilman Jason Armstrong asked the specifics of the reduction. Mayor Carl Demshar said they city would waive the entire event fee but would still require the deposit. He said once everything was cleaned up and put back to normal, the family would receive the deposit back.

The event will take place on Feb. 21 and will feature boxing matches provided by Rocks Boxing. Tickets will be $20 and will be sold the day of the benefit and also at the door that night. Food will be served and is included in the price of the ticket.

All proceeds for the event will help cover the medical costs for resident Bobby Trujillo. He was diagnosed with ALS in December of 2013. Recently, the family received word Bobby only has six months or less to live.

Trujillo’s family was at the meeting and told the council Bobby was born and raised here and they were lucky to be in such a caring and giving community.

Not only did the council waive the fee, the food is being donated by residents of the community and Rocks Boxing is donating its ring, its time and will be providing the boxers.

There will not be alcohol served at the event.

Grant request

A request to apply for a grant by the Rock Springs Parks and Recreation Department also received unanimous approval from the council. The grant is a Wyoming State Forestry Grant and if successful, the Parks Department will use it to replace trees at the Foothill Wetlands Park as well as possibly being used for other tree-related items.

The grant does not require any matching funds from the city.
