ROCK SPRINGS – Several items from the Rock Springs Parks and Recreation Department will be up for action at Tuesday night’s regular Rock Springs City Council meeting. Included is a request from the board to give active military personnel access to the indoor recreation facilities.
The Rock Springs Parks and Recreation Board has sent the request for council approval. In a letter to the council, Park and Recreation Board Chairman Ron Cheese explained a little about the request. After officially making the request, Cheese stressed in his letter this is only for active members of the armed forces at this time.
“We believe it is an amazing way to say thank you taking the time to serve our country,” Cheese said in the letter.
Thank You letter
In September, a monument was dedicated at the Bitter Creek Bark Park in memory of Rock Springs Councilman Glenn Sugano. Recently, the city received a letter from Sugano’s family thanking them for this tribute.
“The ceremony and dog park monument dedicated this past September in Glenn’s memory was extremely moving and very much appreciated by the family. As you know, Glenn was a humble man and would be grateful but also a little embarrassed by this honor. This sentiment and acknowledgement of Glenn’s service are a fitting and touching tribute.
Our family is very grateful for everyone’s involvement and efforts. Thank you for remembering him in this way. Glenn truly made a difference to the community and is missed by all.”
Other Park and Rec Requests
There will be three other requests from the Parks and Recreation Department which the council will take action on.
One is for permission to seek bids on a utility tractor and a replacement vehicle for parks operations. Parks and Recreation Director Dave Lansang explained the new unit will replace a 1990 John Deere.
As for the replacement vehicle, Lansang said the oldest pickup in the parks operation’s fleet is a 1988 Dodge with 93,320 miles which has reached its effective life span and has many mechanical issues.
Both of these purchases are funded within the current Fiscal Year, 2014-2015 budget. Lansang said the department budgeted $35,000 to replace the tractor and $30,000 to replace the pickup truck.
The other two requests are to fill two vacant positions in the parks department. The first is for permission to fill a vacant maintenance crew supervisor and the second is to fill a vacant parks maintenance worker position.
