Wolves Return to Winning Ways with Last Minute Win

CODY – After a slow start, the Green River Wolves responded and scored with seconds left to stay at the top of the 3A conference. Candon Croft capped a drive with 11 seconds to go, beating Cody, 25-18.

Croft finished with 80 yards on the ground with two scores including the game winner. Drew Wilson rushed for 90 yards, and Chance Hofer would throw for 100 in the win.

The first quarter looked a lot like the Wolves were back in Star Valley as Green River lost the field position battle. Cody took advantage scoring once in the first quarter and then again to start the second. Offensively, Green River struggled most of the first half.

With the half coming to and end, Chance Hofer and the Green River offense found its rhythm. Drew Wilson finished a strong  drive with a one-yard plunge, Despite the two early scores, the extra-points had the Wolves within six at the break.

The Wolves were able to keep moving to start the second half as a field goal pulled Green River within two. The Green River defense shut down Cody as the field goal was the only points in the third.

The defense gave the Wolves the spark they needed to get over the hump. Jordan Tucker recovered a fumble to put the Wolves in striking distance. Green River’s offense moved the ball, and Hofer found Devin Love in the endzone to give GRHS its first lead of the game, 18-12.

Cody came right back and with 4:40 left had the game even at 18. James Bunderman kept the game even as he broke through to block the extra points.

Green River went back to work and started the move for the win. The Wolves faced two third downs on the drive, but Hofer would find Cole White and Taylor Thorton through the air to keep the drive moving.  With 40 seconds left, Candon Croft broke through a hole and moved the ball to the five-yard line.

A penalty moved Green River back, but Croft took the handoff and with 16 seconds gave the Wolves the 25-18 lead. Cody had one more chance, but a Chase Stoeger interception sealed the win.
