GREEN RIVER — The Green River City Council approved a $125,000 amendment to a professional services agreement with Steiner Thuesen for design and engineering work on an expansion of the Riverview Cemetery during their Tuesday night meeting.

Parks and Recreation Director Katie Duncombe said the 100-year-old cemetery only has 199 full burial plots open. The proposed expansion would cover about 6 acres and add just over 1,700 plots. Duncombe said that at an average of 36 burials a year, the added space would extend the cemetery’s lifespan for more than 50 years.

The work builds on a master plan completed in October 2024 and would move the project to 65% design and produce a construction budget. The amendment includes soil investigation, grading, drainage design, walking paths, road, burial improvements and irrigation planning.

Duncombe said the expansion, to the east of the existing plots, has steep grades and city staff will look for ways to cut costs as design work progresses.

The motion passed unanimously.

Historic Preservation Committee

Mayor Pete Rust announced the return of the Green River Historic Preservation Committee with the appointment of six members during the meeting. Rust told the Council the committee is being reinstated to address issues with some of the city’s most historic buildings.

After the meeting, Rust told SweetwaterNOW the committee was around for several years before slowly fizzling out. He said earlier work included lead paint abatement and efforts to preserve the old railroad station and Carnegie Library.

Rust said the new committee hasn’t officially met yet but attention has been on the Tomahawk Hotel, as well as the Carnegie Library and a few downtown buildings.
