Mustangs Win Third Straight in Defensive Battle

ROCK SPRINGS – Mark up another win for the Mustangs as Western Wyoming made it three in a row at Colorado Northwestern Tuesday night, 62-55. WWCC moved to 11-8 on the season with the win.

The Mustangs entered with a win over CNCC earlier in the season, 81-69. The second meeting of the teams was much closer.

Neither team was able to pull away to start as back-to-back buckets by Kur Kuath had the Mustangs up six at the ten-minute mark of the first half.  Western jumped up as many as ten but a strong run to close out the half by CNCC had the lead down to two at the break, 33-31.

The Spartans came out of the locker room and took the lead away from WWCC. The teams traded the lead over the next several minutes. A strong drive by Josh Fearing and a post bucket from Kuath had the Mustangs up three, 49-46 heading into the final eight minutes of the game.

With time ticking down, Western picked its moments offensively. Drives to the basket led to trips to the foul line and the Mustangs converted. In the final four minutes of the game, the Mustangs outscored CNCC 10-3 to take the 62-55 win.

After a strong Mustang Invitational, Callum Lawson continued his hot play on Tuesday. He finished with a double-double on the night pouring in 20 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. David Thornton finished with 14 after scoring 10 in the first half.

The Mustangs return home for their second tournament in as many weekends. They open the Western Wyoming Classic Friday night at 7 p.m. against Eastern Wyoming. They return to Rushmore Floor Saturday for a 4 p.m. tip against Rexburg United.
