
Ward was captured in Mexico  after an investigation by Sweetwater County Sheriff’s office Sergeants Joe Tomich and John Grossnickle, who supervise the Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Apprehension Team. The Sweetwater County team worked the case with the United States Marshals Service.
They learned that Ward, an American citizen, was in hiding in northwest Mexico. At the request of Federal law enforcement officials, Mexican authorities apprehended Ward and deported him. He was transported to a facility at Nogales, Arizona, where he was handed over to American law enforcement officers to be transported to Sweetwater County.
Ward who was only handcuffed at the time he escaped from the private van guards while their transport van was stopped at a rest stop near Independence Rock. Ward was not wearing leg chains. The escape occurred on Saturday and Ward is still on the loose. Ward is considered to be extremely dangerous. He was last seen wearing khaki shorts, a black shirt and flip flops.
