SWEETWATER COUNTY — The Sweetwater County Fire Department is working hard this week to ensure that this year’s “Fire Prevention Week” programs are reaching out to the rural schools within Sweetwater County.
County Fire Warden, Mike Bournazian stated the importance of reaching all the kids in the county, “Every child needs to be introduced to the practices of being Fire Smart and given the chance to learn from their local firefighters what to plan for and expect if they find themselves in a fire at home, or how to recognize when their surroundings are not Fire Safe. More than half of all fatal fires in residential homes are a direct result of not having a working smoke detector. Every child deserves a safe home.”
This week, The Sweetwater County Fire Department was able to visit and share fire prevention messages and activities with the McKinnon and Granger elementary schools. The Wamsutter Fire Department is coordinating the activities for the Wamsutter school in the coming days.
These programs were supported by presentations and personnel from the surrounding areas and included the Green River Fire Dept., Rock Springs BLM, Sweetwater County Fire District #1 and the Granger Fire Department. This year marks the first time that all the agencies came together to promote Fire Prevention in these outlying schools.
The children, teachers and staff were extremely grateful for the commitment that was put forth to ensure all the children in the entire county receive the support and education of Fire Prevention and get to experience the planning and actions of being “Fire Smart” with hand-on opportunities that already exist in the larger schools in Rock Springs and Green River.
There are numerous Home Schooled children within the county and there are several opportunities for them to receive and participate in Fire Prevention Week activities through their local fire department. They can call any of the fire stations in their neighborhoods for more information. If anyone does not know who or how to contact the local department they can call the Sweetwater County Fire Department for more information and coordination at 307-922-5360.
