GREEN RIVER – Rock Springs had a strong opening day with Preston Portillo bringing home two regional titles on Friday.
Portillo won the 800 meters by almost three seconds and followed it with a 3200 win. In the 3200, Tiger Parker Jones was right behind in second. Green River’s Braden Reichl was second to Portillo in the 800. Reichl’s finish was the best of the day for the Wolves.
Action continues on Saturday with several runners from both Green River and Rock Springs chasing titles.
Boys 100 Meters Prelim
Tigers Mathew Vesco and Oaklan Jenkins finished Friday’s preliminaries in ninth and 10th respectively. Kyle Cacho was the highest finishing Green River runner crossing in 11th.
Boys 200 Meters Prelims
Tiger Hunter Hanson was the highest Tiger coming in ninth. Jaeden Carnahan just missed a top-ten finish coming in 11th. Kyle Cacho was again the top Wolves runner coming in tenth.
Boys 400 Meters Prelims
Green River’s Cole White ran a 52.54 to finish in the sixth spot on Friday. Brenden Lapp led the way for Rock Springs with an eighth-place finish. Wolves Zach Orr and Caleb Nathan finished 12th and 13th respectively.
Boys 800 Meter Finals
Preston Portillo scorched the track to take the 800 regional title. Portillo ran a 1:58.70 followed by Green River’s Braden Reichl who finished with a time of 2:01.14. Tiger Joe Depoyster finished in eighth and Call Butterfield crossed in ninth.
Boys 3200 Meter Finals
Preston Portillo took his second regional title in the 3200 with a time of 10:15.66. Teammate Parker Jones finished second with finishing in 10:26.38. Tiger’s Clay Goich crossed in fifth with David Medina right behind in sixth. Tanner Adam led the Wolves with an 11th-place finish followed by Curtis Westensow in 12th
Boys 110 Meter Hurdles Prelims
Tiger Trent Rasmussen will go for a title on Saturday after finishing second on Friday. His time of 15.75 was just off the top time of 15.71. Erick Salcido crossed the line in the sixth spot. Chance Hofer paced Green River with an eighth-place finish. Cole Goich and Raymond Huang finished 11th and 12th.
Boys 300 Meter Hurdles Prelims
Trent Rasmussen will also be chasing a 300 hurdle title on Saturday He crossed with a time of 42.60 which put him in second. Green River’s Chance Hofer crossed in the sixth position while Tiger Erick Salcido finished in eighth. RSHS Freshman Cole Goich crossed in 11th.
Boys 4×100 Meter Relay Finals
The Rock Springs team of Marcus Kalista, Hunter Hanson, Mathew Vesco and Oaklan Jenkins crossed in fourth. Wolves James Bunderman, Drew Wilson, Kyle Cacho and Cole White finished in fifth.
Boys Long Jump Finals
Kell Ransom just missed a regional title as his jump of 20-09.00 put him in third overall. Riverton’s Alec Richardson took the title with a 22-04.75. Green River’s Drew Wilson and Trey McGhee finished in the top ten. Wilson jumped to eighth while McGhee finished in ninth. Tiger Oaklan Jenkins finished in the 10th spot.
Boys Discus Throw Finals
Both the Tigers and Wolves had two finish in the top ten. Dylen Turcato led the way for Rock Springs with a fifth-place finish while Isaac Huffman was right behind in sixth. Hunter Sparks was the top Green River thrower finishing in seventh. Nick Boldt came in 10th for the Wolves.
