The World Needs More Cowboys

Homecoming events will take place October 13-20, with the theme “The World Needs More Cowboys.”

Activities will range from department open house celebrations, tailgate parties and the annual Homecoming parade to Cowboy Coffee at the All Alumni and Friends Reunion in conjunction with the Pokes pregame pep rally.

The week caps off with the UW football game against Utah State University.

About Governor Mead and First Lady Mead

Matt Mead (J.D. ’87) has served as Wyoming’s 32nd governor since January 2011 and is wrapping up his second term. Earlier in his career, he served as a county prosecutor in Gillette; as a federal prosecutor at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Cheyenne; and as United States Attorney for Wyoming from 2001-07.

Mead also was in private practice in Cheyenne for a number of years. He was born and raised in Jackson.

Carol (Mintzer) Mead (B.S. ’88) is the author of two books: “Wyoming Firsts” and “Blazing Wyoming Bonnets.”

“Wyoming Firsts,” featuring notable moments in Wyoming history, has been distributed at no cost to more than 8,000 first-graders. “Blazing Wyoming Bonnets,” featuring trailblazing women in Wyoming history, will be published and distributed at no cost to fourth-graders this fall.

During her tenure as first lady, Mead has promoted literacy in schools and has enjoyed reading to children throughout the state. She has encouraged parents and children to read together daily; worked with the UW College of Education to establish the Literacy Research Center and Clinic; and showcased Wyoming high school students’ artwork at the governor’s residence.

The Meads, who have two children, own and operate an agriculture business in southeast Wyoming, which includes a farm in Goshen County and a ranch in Albany County.

The Homecoming Parade and Football Game

They will lead the Homecoming parade Saturday, October 20, which begins at 8 am, starting at Ninth Street and Ivinson Avenue. The UW Alumni Association (UWAA) coordinates the parade.

Those interested in participating in the parade must fill out an application and return it to the UWAA office at the Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center by 4 pm Friday, October 12. Applications are available at www.uwyo.edu/homecoming.

The Homecoming football game begins at 12:30 pm Saturday, October 20. The Pepsi Pregame Zone in the Indoor Practice Facility opens three hours before kickoff.

Homecoming Registration

Homecoming registration is scheduled Friday, October 19, from 7:30 am-5 pm and Saturday, October 20, from 8-11 am at the Alumni Center in the Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center, located at 222 S. 22nd St.

Participants will be given a University Store discount coupon (only for UW graduates), the Homecoming events schedule booklet and an update for contact information.

If participants register at the Alumni Center, they are eligible to win a $100 University Store gift card.

Those who preregister for Homecoming, at a cost of $10, will receive a UWAA Homecoming T-shirt. Preregistration to receive the T-shirt is available until October 7 by visiting http://wyoalumni.uwyo.edu/hc18.

T-shirts only are available through preregistration, and limited quantities are available. Those who have preregistered can pick up their T-shirt at the registration location October 19 during registration hours. Proceeds support the UWAA scholarship program.



UWAA 50th Club Reunion

The UWAA will celebrate the 50th Club Reunion October 19-20. The reunion will celebrate the honoree class of 1968; all alumni who have graduated earlier are invited to attend.

2018 Alumni and Medallion Service Award

The UWAA also will honor the 2018 Distinguished Alumni and Medallion Service Award recipients, who will be announced in the September issue of the UWyo Magazine. For more information about the awards, visit www.uwyo.edu/alumni.

Cowboy Coffee at the All Alumni and Friends Reunion is Saturday, October 20, at the Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center from 8:30-11 am. Breakfast items, along with a cash bar, will be available.

UWAA members with ID cards will receive one complimentary drink ticket. First Interstate Bank sponsors the event.



Pokes Pregame Pep Rally

The event is in conjunction with the Pokes pregame pep rally featuring the Western Thunder Marching Band and UW cheer team. UW football Coach Craig Bohl will give remarks at 10:15 am, followed by the Cowboy Walk.
