The first documented discovery of coal in the Rock Springs area occurred in 1850 by a U.S. army survey party lead by Jim Bridger. Soon after, the coal boom occurred. This brought people and cultures from all over the world to the Rock Springs area, especially the Chinese and people from several Slavic countries.
Amazingly, much of the diversity that existed during the coal boom, still exists today. Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County celebrates and supports this diversity. Medical professionals from different nationalities and with the ability to speak many different languages are currently on staff at the hospital.
