PETE RUST
Green River Mayor

Tell us a bit about yourself…

I have lived in WY for nearly 40 years. I came here in 1980 to fight wildfires for the U.S. Forest service and as a Ranger at Big Firehole Campground and secured a job with the Sweetwater County Planning Department and have been here ever since.

Along the way I found the love of my life. Shelley is a born and raised native of Green River,  and we just celebrated our 30-year anniversary.

We have two wonderful sons. Our oldest Ryan, is the Director of the Young At Heart Senior enter in Rock Springs, and our youngest Dylan is completing his senior year and is in the process of applying to medical schools.

I was the Land Use Director for Sweetwater County for 11 years administering Planning, Zoning and Subdivision laws and policy.

I then worked as an Investigator/Inspector for WY Worker Safety/OSHA for six counties in southwest Wyoming for four years.  I then became the Transportation Director for Sweetwater County School District # 1, a job I retired from in 2014.

In retirement I write a weekly sports column for the Green River Star, I sub-teach as needed in School District #2 and I have been the Mayor of Green River for soon to be four years.

I was on the Green River City Council for two terms from 2002-2010 and prior to that served on numerous Boards and Commissions.

What Makes you the best choice for Green River Mayor?

I think I am the best choice for the position of Mayor as we have built an excellent management team and I work well with our city administrator, city department heads and all our other valuable city employees.

In my 38 years+ employment in Sweetwater County I have worked with and for both cities, Sweetwater County, the State of Wyoming and the federal government and the private sector and understand the importance and the workings of the various intergovernmental actors and agencies and local Industry and have established many valuable relationships which aids me in forwarding the interests of our city and region.

My educational background also provides a solid foundation for this job as I have a Bachelors Degree in Political Science, Pre-Law (certified Para Legal) from CSUC and a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Wyoming.

What do you hope to accomplish in your first year if re-elected?

What I would like to accomplish is a continuation of many critical economic development projects, including the revitalization of downtown, and economic diversification for this area and the State so we can break the boom/bust cycle which has dominated Wyoming’s economy for the past several decades.

We also need to train a competent grants person which we are in the process of doing and insure that we maximize use of the various funding sources that are available to us thru grants so that we can save and maximize the use of taxpayer dollars.

We also need to enhance our relationships with all local governments, in particular, so when can better leverage the resources that we have in common as well as continue to work with the colleges (WWCC and UW) so that we can best prepare our work force (our kids) for the changing needs of our economy.
