GREEN RIVER – For over 30 years now, many residents of Sweetwater County have invited this man into their homes every Friday night during the fall months. Recently, Steve Core added another honor to his wall.
At the recent National Sports Media Association banquet in North Carolina, the voice of Green River Wolves Athletics was awarded the Wyoming Sportscaster of the year. This is the third time the Radio Network General Manager has won this award. The first being in 2004 and then again in 2007.
The award is voted on by the different members throughout the state of Wyoming. The nominating process took place in December and then results were tallied in January. The banquet took place in Salisbury, North Carolina, and includes a Hall of Fame Ceremony. Among this year’s Hall of Fame class were Chris Berman and Billy Packer.
While Core admits he has never been a fan of Berman’s broadcasting because it is too “gimmicky,” he said it was an incredible experience meeting and talking with him.
“These guys check their egos at the door,” Core said. “He was just excited about me winning.”
Thirty-One Years of Broadcasting
This year marked the 31st year Steve Core will broadcast Green River Wolves Football. Growing up in Greybull, Core developed a love for sports early on. He was involved in football, basketball, and golf in high school and continued his golf career in college.
Core said he understood early that his playing days would most likely be finished after high school but wanted to be still involved in the sporting world. As a sophomore in high school, he got a job at a local radio station. He continued in college as Central Wyoming Community College had a student run radio station. He would finish his journalism degree at the University of Wyoming.
His journey soon made a stop in Green River. Core’s wife Nancy was hired on at Sweetwater County School District No. 2 while he continued his broadcasting career at the Radio Network. Soon the young family was growing.
Core explained he and his wife decided early on they would give their children the same opportunities they had growing up in a small community. Green River would become home. Core also credits Al and Faith Harris for being there and taking care of his family, The rest in Green River broadcasting history.
Green River Sports
Of the thousands of touchdowns and the numerous outstanding individual efforts he has called over the years, Core has one moment which will stand out as his favorite. The 2004 Green River Wolves football season was a magical one as the team finished 11-0 and brought home a state title. Not only was Core involved in a professional aspect, but his son was also a member of the team.
While he vividly recalled the excitement of bringing the news to the folks back home, he said it was a little bit of a double-edged sword for him.
“If I had to do it over again I would watch it from the stands as a dad,” Core said.
Core’s love of Green River athletics runs deep likening the program to the story of the “Little Engine that Could.” Being a smaller school, Core said they are always facing the bigger schools in the state making them underdogs in most matchups with makes it fun each time out. This was put in the spotlight as the Wolves made an unexpected run to the state title game last season. Core said he is excited to see the boys respond in the fall.
